ORIENTEERING UTAH

Orienteering Utah is an amateur athletic club based in the Salt Lake City Metro for those passionate about navigational sports. The team competing at USARA National is comprised of club officers Ian Hoag & Fletcher Hamel (both having substantial orienteering and adventure racing experience at the national & international level), and Leslie Howlett (better known for her dominant Ultra Running performances over the last decade).

WE DON’T QUIT

WDQ is an African American Adventure Racing Club with a mission to get more Black people outside through participation in the exciting sport of adventure racing.

Their team consists of a sister and brother and his wife. All originally from California. This family team has been racing for 3-6 years. Dana flies to the East Coast every year to race, and now that there's a race in California, it's Kofi and Safiya's turn to make the cross country trip. While they have not raced as a trio, Safiya has raced with both other members. And they hope that Dana and Kofi - being siblings - would count for something!

ROOTSTOCK RACING

This is their first time adventure racing as an all-female Rootstock team!

The members of the two-time national champion Rootstock Racing race team have been competing around the world for nearly twenty years. Serious amateur athletes, all with full-time jobs, they love adventure, travel, and the great outdoors. They balance busy professional and family lives with their passion for sports and competition, and value giving back to our local communities by fostering adventure sports and active-living in the outdoors.

TEAM KODIAK BIG BEAR

The 3 members of Team Kodiak Big Bear organize the Kodiak Ultra Marathons in Big Bear Lake, CA. Our team captain is Harald (the German) Zundel who has many years of professional adventure racing experience including the most recent Eco Challenge in Fiji. His former team was Team Balance Bar among others. Susie Schmelzer is Harald's wife and just learned to mountain bike a couple months ago. Matt Smith has bike-packed from CA to Alaska and recently finished the Cocodona 250 mile trail run in 4th place. All 3 team members mainly focus on trail running, and the only race they've competed in all together was the annual 4 hours and 20 minutes of Joshua Tree trail run, which takes place on a 1 mile loop on April 20 each year.

TEAM GEAR JUNKIE

The team officially formed in 2021, a few months after Stephen, Kyle, and Ryan began meeting up every Wednesday night at 8pm to run/bike/canoe self-made 'Wednesday Night Adventure' courses around the Twin Cities. Affiliated with GearJunkie.com, the team also stress-tests some of the latest outdoor gear at Adventure Races around the U.S.

Stephen Regenold, the founder of GearJunkie.com (a leading outdoor-adventure publication) and a long-time adventure racer, is Team Captain of Team GearJunkie. Kyle Nossaman (Director of Sales at GearJunkie) and Ryan Braski (neighbor of Stephen Regenold) are team members.

TEAM VERT

The Vermont Endurance Racing Team was founded as the Virginia Endurance Racing Team in 2020 by Matt and Alyssa. After a couple races together, they realized they needed some moral support and gave Will a call. We have spent 2022 expanding our roster and are excited about some new talent we hope to continue to develop and race with in the coming years. This is our first nationals, but between the three of us, we have extensive endurance success including an FKT, a wildcat hat, and an Umeke bowl among many other long distance adventures.

BRF BARF RACING

BRF Barf Racing is Laura Comtois, Lauren Kraft, and Anne Lang. Named for the podcast of the same name, BRF Barf was created in 2017 with the goal to inspire others through tales of adventure, and more often, misadventure. BRF stands for Best Running Friends and Barf stands for, well...vomit!
Anne's first introduction to endurance sports was through ultra running. As Anne ramped up her training to prepare for her first 100 miler, she met Lauren. Since their first run together, Anne has conned Lauren into doing all kinds of endurance events by promising her endless Starbucks and ice cream. Anne has finished 10+ 100 mile ultras, run a one mile loop for 72 hours, and is the female Fastest Known Time holder on the Sheltowee Trail.
Lauren was already an accomplished cyclist, having ridden her bike across the country, competing in cyclocross, road, and mountain bike events, when she was conned into becoming an ultra runner by Anne. Lauren has won the Ozark Trail 100, among other 100 wins, and has finished the Barkley Fall Classic 7x. These accomplishments are only shadowed by being a Beer Mile champion and holding steady at 1st place in the heart of her Australian Shepard, Boo.
Laura became interested in Adventure Racing in 2006. Her first 2 races were 3 and 6 hours, then she jumped in the deep end with a 36 hour race, why not? Since then she has won some races, arrived well past race cut offs, and learned she has spider monkey capabilities under pressure. Over the last 16 years, she's raced in Vermont, across the Midwest, and as far south as Florida doing races from 6 hours to 72hours, much of that with mixed gender team Only MOSTLY Lost. This will be Laura's 10th AR Nationals and first time racing out west.
Laura conned Anne and Lauren into trying an adventure race in 2019 (noticing a pattern here?) and they were sold after experiencing No Sleep's 2019 Sand Bar on a sandbar. In the best turn of events and decisions ever, Laura joined Anne and Lauren on team BRF Barf Racing in 2021. This will be their second time racing Nationals together, and they are pushing for their most outstanding showing yet.

TEAM ONYX / TIKEE

This team is comprised of adventure racers from across the US from both Team Onyx and Team Tikee. Wilo Nater and Andrea Johnson are from team Onyx, the first All-Black team in expedition racing and Tim Clinton is a member of Team Tikee, a team devoted to combatting the effects of structural racism on Black maternal health.

Wilo and Andrea have raced together, but this will be the first time racing with Tim who they have shared a few courses with this past year, most recently at the Shenandoah Epic. Andrea is an educator, trainer, and youth running coach for the Oakland Cubs in Oakland, CA., and has been a competitive athlete for over 25 years. Wilo is a retired military veteran and current mentor/educator to underprivileged youth out of Rock Hill, SC. Tim is a Washington DC Lawyer and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitor. The love and draw to challenges inspire this team to take on Nationals and the experiences it offers.

TEAM PSYCHED

Their goal for the USARA National Championship is to show the world what kids and families can do! This team has been racing together since birth (literally)!

Their journey started in 1999 when Colleen joined Shane and his brothers on a race and they fell in love. 22 years and 6 children later, they're still racing as a family. This years nationals team will be Shane (dad), Sara (16) and Taylor (15).

This team shares all the roles on the team, but here is where each takes lead.

With teammate Tom Proulx, "And Loving It!" finished 5th in the Master's Division of the USARA Nationals in Missouri in 2007. We have been racing together regularly for over 15 years and are aiming to cross the finish line again this year.

CHERUBINI BROTHERS AR

With 20 years of adventure racing experience, the Cherubini Brothers Adventure Racing team are very much looking forward to the challenge of racing Nationals in the Eastern Sierras! As per their name, the team consists of three brothers – identical twins Mike and Jeff (53) and ‘younger’ brother JJ (50).

The brothers started their outdoor adventure play together at a young age – camping and hiking in middle school, running cross country and track in high school, playing rugby in college, then road & mountain bike racing; before discovering, and quickly falling in love with, Adventure Racing in the early 2000s. Now all married with a combined 5 kids, they are thankful for the unconditional support they receive from their families. And with that support over the years, Team Cherubini has completed over 50 adventure races ranging from 6hr sprints to 30hr Nationals (2017, 2018, and 2019 editions).

With different mindsets, approaches to training, and skills in competition, the brothers continue to share their love of adventure racing and the community values the sport promotes. In terms of these values, strength of diversity (within and amongst teams) and respect (for each other and the environment) are at the top of their list. Notably, regardless of race outcome, the brothers most value their collaborative spirit and the time they get to spend together in the great outdoors!

LOST ARROW SPORTS

Brenda brings 25 yrs of AR experience to the team with a wealth of knowledge in all race distances and has raced in many countries around the world. Barbara has been racing in AR for 10 yrs with multiple expedition races under her belt, as well as a ton of shorter distances and filling many team roles. Angel is a race director and co-owner of Lost Arrow Sports and has been adventure racing and orienteering for 10 years, including one solo expedition race. We are excited to come together as a strong women’s team to represent women in adventure racing!

TAHOE ADVENTURE RACERS

They have raced together for many years doing day long, multi-day and expedition length races. One EcoChallenge and four PQ's between two of them... but not together.

Their goal for this year's National Championship is to finish strong despite their advanced, combined ages and double knee replacement for one member.

LUCKY

Team Lucky is a team that used to race in the mid 2000s with Johnny Ryan and Mila Olsen as part of their core. Rolly Delfin has occasionally raced with Johnny and this time will be racing along with Mila.

LOS PADRES LOCOS

We don't have a bio. We have only met as a team 3 times. Competing in a 24 hour race has been a longterm goal for Jeff. With this race being in California, it became a must. One of Jeff's regular teammates was not interested in a 24 hour race. Al, Jeff's neighbor, became his replacement. With a late injury to Jeff's other teammate (Rusty), Jeff and Al picked up Travis, who neither of them had met, but was highly recommend from one of Jeff's coworkers. So far, so good.
In the real word, Travis is in construction, Jeff is a teacher, and Al is a fire fighter.

TOWER RACING

Tower Racing is on a mission to have the best time racing. You might find them in the woods laughing and singing along and cheering on all the other teams.

Neil Murphy

We have a handful of races under our belts individually, but this is our first race together as a team. We hope to communicate well, be kind to one another, and provide opportunities for each other to achieve personal and team growth. We pledge to give it our all out on the race course.

TETON ADVENTURE RACERS

Going on three years of sleep deprivation training from raising a sleep-resistant child, Abby and Jason of Teton Adventure Racers are ready to party all night long in Bishop. Joining them will be Jason Blair of Steamboat, CO. This will be their first time racing all together, but with a good amount of combined experience, they are hopeful to find a few checkpoints and move fast in between them.
