Sand Trap

Sand fields on Stage 2

Route choice is crucial in any adventure race, and even more so when the pace is fast like it is today. As teams came off Mammoth Mountain on their bikes, they were faced with a tough choice - to go a longer route on technical single and double track trails, or cut off some distance by taking some roads that look shorter, but may be less traveled. Then two or three teams that opted for the shortcut were in for a surprise as the roads became deeper with sand, harder to ride, and less and less navigable. We have every confidence that those teams will find their way back to the route, but they will have worked a lot harder than they planned to by this time in the race. Lucky for them, there will still be snow cones at TA2 when they get here.
